Milestones
As a cyclist – or a certain type of cyclist anyway – I like to keep track of my riding stats.
It’s something I’ve done for many years, originally with a basic bike computer, then with the addition of a spreadsheet and latterly with my GPS. The advent of Strava has raised things to a whole new level.
I don’t consider this to be strange. One Mole I know happened to track all sorts of things relating to their riding if I remember rightly, including number of cakes (and what they were), cups of coffee vs tea, punctures, rides in the rain and so on. People get quite engrossed in this sort of thing.
On Strava I now track individual component mileage where it makes sense to do so. So I can tell you how many miles a chain or cassette has done, or how many miles my road tyres have covered. For the record, the figure currently sits at 3472.1 miles on my Continental GP 4 seasons.
This week I’ve reached multiple milestones. I’ve racked up just over 2000 miles for the year (both on and off road), notched a total north of 3000 miles on my Five, passed the 7500 mile mark on my road bike and 700 miles on my Trek District 1 ‘town bike’, all since I joined Strava in April 2011.

Cant believe you said i can be such a nerd for my time lapse bike build vid and yet you admit to this freakishly nerd like behaviour.
Worrying parallels with train/plane spotting ? i’ll be looking out for the notebook and clipboard on future rides ?

Haha I thought I said nerd ‘in a good way’. A close look at your lustworthy Stanton with all that green detailing will underline my point I think.
Your train spotting comment is worryingly close 🙂

No strava…not ever, but I do track my mileage and record it on a spreadsheet. 3000 miles for 2015 so far and my drivechain has reached 4500 miles for the first time…reflecting how dry it has been this year and last.

Your well travelled Five is all the more impressive considering Strava doesn’t include the first 4 years of its life!
Think how low your cost per mile must be. The real achievement is dropping below £1 per mile. Extra kudos if you work in kilometres lol
Most of what I would consider a milestone lately has been to do with making it down a trail of particular gnarliness ALIVE!

Yes I think the Five has probably managed about 7000 miles in total and quite possibly much more – still on it’s original but very tired rear shock.
I haven’t seen you struggle on many trails recently Elliott!
