Dusk til Dawn (D2D) 2010 is on the way

Marin Dusk til Dawn race, Thetford
Rather than talk about rides we’ve already done (and boy does it feel like we ride a lot!), I thought it’s time to mention what looks to have established itself – after just one year – as our annual mass racing pilgrimage. Yes, Dusk til Dawn (D2D) is looming.

Members of the Muddymoles forum will be well aware of this year’s plans. Spurred on by our relative success last year we’ve managed to put together a Molemeet of some 21 moles, consisting of six teams and two soloists as well as Paul901 who has ‘volunteered’ to be the Pit B!tch. We’re expecting to have quite a Mole Village deep in Thetford Forest so if you’re going look out for us. We even have some club shirts these days too.

For those who haven’t attended before I’ll refer you to Jez’s excellent rundown of what to expect from a MTB race and point you especially at point 5. You cannot take enough warm clothing believe me, and a wooly hat is essential.

If you fancy a flavour of last year’s event, there’s a summary of the 2009 Dusk til Dawn event here including last year’s race times (largely academic since the course changes each year). There’s also a series of D2D interviews – series 1, series2 and Jez sotto voce. You can tell a lot from those interviews…

So, for 2010, here’s our Marin Dusk til Dawn entry list. Teams are as yet unnamed, but briefly:

Solo

Jez; Tony

Team 1

Adam (13th in the 2010 Kielder 100); Amanda (3rd in the 2010 TransWales)

No pressure guys…

Team 2

Andy661; ?friend?

Team 3

Jem; Matt; Daniel (tbc)

Team 4

PaulM; MarkW; Joe

Team 5

Andy (D’Andy) C; DaveC; Colin; Keith

Team 6

MarkJ; Lee; Simon (Devon) Mole’d; JamesH

Plus of course Paul901 providing back-up.

Teams are not necessarily finalised at this stage so take with a pinch of salt. This is just to record those of us lining up for the start.

Pass the Port and Stilton I say, and see you all there…

Matt is one of the founding Molefathers of the Muddymoles, and is the designer and main administrator of the website.

Having ridden a 2007 Orange Five for many years then a 2016 YT Industries Jeffsy 29er, he now rocks a Bird Aether 9 and a Pace RC-627.

An early On-One Inbred still lurks in the back of the stable as a reminder of how things have moved on. You can even find him on road bikes - currently a 2019 Cannondale Topstone 105 SE, a much-used 2011 Specialized Secteur and very niche belt drive Trek District 1.

If you've ever wondered how we got into mountain biking and how the MuddyMoles started, well wonder no more.

    Matt,

Fully agree about the wooly hat and a decent jacket to wear while you are waiting in the change over area. I couldn’t beleive how cold it was last year in the small hours, especially when you are just waiting around for your team mate to come in.

An added bonus of wearing a hat is it will hide your freakish helmet hair when it gets light!

Having quickly read all those links and particularly the final Jez interview I expect Jez and Tony will get priority from me on the night, I can imagine they will suffer like hell and the help might make the difference to their solo efforts. If they get so bad they get delirious I’m working Dandini’s unused CoDandinMol supplies into them :-0

It sounds like the event has the rider times covered so no need to run round with a notebook and pen.

I refuse to set foot in the carb-fuelled caravan.

So envious of you all . . .

  4. Andy661 says:

My mate is James, has a RockLobster.

Just off out for a spin as i can’t make tomorrow and its hosing it down. So good prep i reckon!

CoDandiniMole could be in short supply as I had to resort to it again over the week-end. So you were right, Colin, no log clearing for me :-0

I have commuted into work yesterday and today, and managed a brisk 90 minute road ride on Sat (hence the use of CoDandiniMole). At least I’m maintaining some fitness, though I’m gutted to have missed out on some cracking rides, by all accounts.

Sore ribs are leading to sense of humour failure as I’m finding it v difficult to get a good night’s kip. Hoping they will be a lot better by next week, though won’t be riding off-road until the week after I suspect (just before D2D)

Ride report: Tuesday 14 September – Solo Darkside

Road riding can be just as challenging – and just as rewarding – as riding our usual off-road routes
