Muddymoles mountain biking in the Surrey Hills and Mole Valley

Preparation for Afan

It’s now just over a week before we head off on our trip to Afan. Last night on our weekly ride we ended up talking about what to take with us – having the luxury of a big white van gives us a bit of freedom so as well as our bikes and kit we tried to think about what else we’d need.

The first thing I thought of was my folding workstand, followed closely by a spare set of brake pads (preferably nicely bedded in). After that, well some Muck off I guess and chain lube. Given the present weather conditions some sun tan cream too and in a bid to maintain balance in the universe some extreme wet weather clothing, ‘just in case’.

But really, we couldn’t think about much else which leaves me with a feeling of unease. I’m sure we’ll need something beyond these basics. Dave is proposing to bring his laptop so we should be able to get plenty of video and photos downloaded for later posting but I’m thinking about important things like copious amounts of beer, bacon and bread for pre and post ride nourishment.

It was proposed that we practice lying on a hillside collectively spelling out the word ‘Help’ to passing rescue services and pointing toward where an unfortunate member of our group was lying with a bike on his head. This didn’t seem a bad idea, and I like the overtones this has to the Vermicious Knids (never thought I’d get Vermicious Knids into a Muddymoles blog post!).

Can anyone spot anything obvious we’ve forgotten?

About the author

Matt is one of the founding Molefathers of the Muddymoles, and is the designer and main administrator of the website.

Having ridden a 2007 Orange Five for many years then a 2016 YT Industries Jeffsy 29er, he now rocks a Bird Aether 9 and a Pace RC-627.

An early On-One Inbred still lurks in the back of the stable as a reminder of how things have moved on. You can even find him on road bikes - currently a 2019 Cannondale Topstone 105 SE, a much-used 2011 Specialized Secteur and very niche belt drive Trek District 1.

If you've ever wondered how we got into mountain biking and how the MuddyMoles started, well wonder no more.

Hows about First Aid Kit ?

GPS probably not required – its so well signposted even I can’t get lost up there.
