Afan? It’s well tidy it is

Posted by Matt | May 19, 2008 | 15 comments so far

Thanks to Colin’s shepherding skills we’re just back from our first weekend in Afan together. What a weekend! Over the next few days no doubt various Moles will publish their thoughts, pictures and videos but for starters here’s my memories from the weekend.

  1. Our first run of the weekend down the Zigzag trail on The Wall, in all it’s wibbly legged heart-in-mouth terror
  2. Whooping Mark’s progress through the boulder field on Grand Canyon – now that was funny
  3. Colin’s improbable speed down Sidewinder
  4. Mark and Simon’s Welsh accents – aaarggh!
  5. Colin’s gloves – lovely!
  6. The Welsh family taking their cat for a walk
  7. The final eyes-on-stalks, properly exhausted Peregrine Ridge/Jetlag blast on Skyline

A really, really great weekend, thanks to all those who played their part in making it an unforgettable experience.

About the author

Matt is one of the founding Molefathers of the Muddymoles, and is the designer and main administrator of the website.

Having ridden a 2007 Orange Five for many years then a 2016 YT Industries Jeffsy 29er, he now rocks a Bird Aether 9 and a Pace RC-627.

An early On-One Inbred still lurks in the back of the stable as a reminder of how things have moved on. You can even find him on road bikes - currently a 2019 Cannondale Topstone 105 SE, a much-used 2011 Specialized Secteur and very niche belt drive Trek District 1.

If you've ever wondered how we got into mountain biking and how the MuddyMoles started, well wonder no more.

I really don’t know where to begin with my weekend report. So much happened, so much fun and hilarity, etc, I’m not sure where to start and how to do it justice.

The post weekend blues set in big time yesterday, as the adrenalin buzz faded.

Report and pics to follow when I’ve got some work done this week.

Awesome trails. The stone drop offs on White’s, the Energy Trail, the final descent of Skyline. Fantastic.

It’s good to be home though. You guys were fun but my girlfriend smells a lot nicer.

  3. Rob says:

Thanks to all you guys for letting me “gatecrash” your trip. I had a brilliant time, especially on the last descent of Skyline – I was “in the zone” all the way down!

    AWESOME !

  4. Colin says:

Thanks to the stiching coming undone, CRC have kindly taken back my very dodgy coloured Troy Lee XC Gloves.

The grey was most certainly not grey, more of a pansy gay blue, hence Matt’s reference above.

So its back to boring but safe black gloves for me in order to avoid any future micky-taking.

  5. Matt says:

    Haha, that’s a shame Colin!

I thought the ‘pansy gay blue’ colour was brave, but what can you do if the stitching ‘comes undone’ (all on it’s own of course!)?

4 trails, 2 falls and tired, tired legs

When the idea of going to Afan this year was first mentioned, I thought “OK, that sounds like a laugh”. It was when Dave C emailed us a copy of the trail map that I realised I had probably just…

    🙂 Have I been rumbled?

A very fortunate coincidence. I think you catch my drift.

I’m not proud of it, but hey, it wasn’t until I saw the pics I realised just how bad the blue-not grey was.

    One casualty

After 1100 miles the drivetrain on Matt’s Orange Five cries ‘enough!’. Although to be fair, it’s been complaining for a while…
